Is Cadillac Super Cruise Worth it?

As automotive manufacturers scramble to be the first to present a fully automated self-driving car, Cadillac offers an exciting new technology that allows for a unique hands-free driving experience. Cadillac Super Cruise is the world’s first true hands-free driving system for the freeway.

Cadillac Super Cruise is an innovative hands-free driving system that makes highway driving more convenient and easier than ever. This system allows you to experience high precision hands-free driving on more than 200,000 miles of LiDAR-mapped U.S. and Canadian highways with confidence. The Super Cruise feature is available on select 2018 and 2020 Cadillac CT6 models, 2021 CT4, CT5, and Escalades and you will also find it on the upcoming 2023 LYRIQ.

How does it work?

Super Cruise works with your Cadillac’s Adaptive Cruise Control system, which controls acceleration and braking. It also employs the use of Cadillac Connect Services in addition to cameras, sensors, and LiDAR mapping to detect curves in the road.

To use Super Cruise, make sure that you are on one of the more than 200,000 compatible roadways. All lane markings should be clearly visible, and you will want to make sure that all cameras and radar sensors are unobstructed. While this may be a hands-free system, it’s still imperative that the driver pays close attention to the road in case they need to retake control. The program’s Driver Attention Camera System will detect whether or not the driver is paying attention to the road ahead.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Cadillac’s Adaptive Cruise Control System uses radar to monitor and automatically maintain a preset driver-selected gap time from the detected vehicle you are following while you steer. This feature reduces the need to frequently brake or accelerate when you are driving. Adaptive Cruise Control or ACC must be enabled before attempting to engage Super Cruise.

On Demand Lane Change

For 2021 and 2022 models with Super Cruise, you can now take advantage of on demand lane change options. With this feature, you can change lanes during the time where Super Cruise is engaged. When the turn signal is activated, the system will scan the road to see when an acceptable opening in the indicated lane is available. The system will also let other drivers know that you are planning to make a lane change. Your vehicle will then merge into the desired lane if it is still safe to do so. Automatic lane change and lane change on demand are not available while trailering.

What’s Next?

With car companies all over the world shooting for Fully autonomous self-driving vehicles, more and more advanced technology has come into play. While a fully self-driving car with no need for driver input or interaction has still yet to be achieved, Cadillac continually outperforms the competition with its selection of driver assisted vehicles. The super cruise system and the soon-to-debut Ultra Cruise in 2023 are among the best systems currently on the market.
